Slipknot may have unveiled more than they were hoping to in their new video for recent single The Devil In I, the first to be taken from their upcoming fifth album, .5: The Gray Chapter. In addition to unleashing the band’s new masks, the clip may have shed light on the identity of Slipknot’s new bass player.
The band first teased their new masks earlier this month in a promo clip for their upcoming North American tour. The clip featured frontman Corey Taylor obscured by plastic sheeting, seemingly donning a grotesque, never-before-seen mask, intercut with flashes of the mask traditionally worn by guitarist Mick Thomson and what fans had speculated was percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan‘s new mask.
Meanwhile, Taylor recently confirmed that the band’s new bassist and drummer will don the same mask. Speaking to Full Metal Jackie, Taylor said that the freshly drafted replacements for late bass player Paul Gray and departed drummer Joey Jordison will wear identical masks to avoid any disrespect.
However, the bass player in the clip does have one unique marking that may have just given away his identity. First noticed by MetalChapel, the bassist in the clip sports a hand tattoo that matches exactly with a tattoo that belongs to Alessandro ‘Vman’ Venturella, who has worked as a guitar tech for Mastodon, Fightstar, and Coheed & Cambria. Venturella also plays guitar for the band Krokodil.
Last month, Taylor said that the band would be keeping the identity of the band’s new drummer under wraps until “the time is right” in order to let “the music to speak for itself”. Many have speculated that Jordison’s replacement is Jay Weinberg, son of longtime E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg.
