Apart from the somewhat shocking, mildly depressing fact that both Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind are still touring, you might not know that the two champions of the 90’s airwaves have beef, and at a festival headlined by Outkast and The Cure it all came to the fore again.

As reported by The Washington Post, both bands performed sets during the same time slot at the BottleRock Festival in Napa Valley last weekend, leaving nostalgic festival goers with a rather painful choice. But those who opted to attend the Smash Mouth stage, got a little more drama than they probably anticipated.

Shrek’s main man Steve Harwell, AKA the frost tipped lead singer of Smash Mouth, reportedly took his moment in the Napa Valley sun to reignite his feud with arch-enemy Stephan Jenkins, the lead singer of Third Eye Blind. “Third Eye Blind can suck my dick,” he said at some point, according to Twitter chatter.

Reports The Post, this rivalry harks back far into the dark days of the nineties when songs like Smash Mouth’s Walking on the Sun and Third Eye Blind’s Semi Charmed Life were MTV hits. Or at least as far back as 2010, when in an interview Harwell talks called Jenkins a “douchebag”.

“You can put that on camera,” he said, on camera. “Cause I really don’t care. He’s not a good person. That’s all I’ll say about that.” Adding fuel to that fire on the weekend, The Post also points out that Smash Mouth brought out former Third Eye guitarist Kevin Cadogan, who was involved in a legal dispute with Jenkins, to play a few songs at BottleRock.

In 2002 Cadogan sued Jenkins for millions of dollars, citing wrongful termination from Third Eye Blind and later settled for an undisclosed amount. He now plays alongside Harwell in his side-project Radio Angel.

The Post reached out to Smash Mouth for further insight and while Harwell declined to take a break from recording (yep, recording) to talk, he let the band’s manager Robert Hayes answer on the record.

“Steve pretty much has a long history of poking fun at Stephan Jenkins,” Hayes said. “There’s no true bad blood there. They’ve toured and done shows together for quite a while. You know, he pokes at [Jenkins], and now that he’s got his former guitar player in a side project, he wanted to poke a little harder.”

He also mentioned that the two frontmen are from rival cities. Smash Mouth is from San Jose, while Third Eye Blind comes from San Francisco. “So it’s easy to poke at him,” said Hayes.

Third Eye Blind declined to comment to the Post on the feud.
