Stone Sour Are Working On A Covers Album

Stone Sour have revealed that they’ve entered a Burbank, California recording studio to begin work on a covers album tentatively set for an early 2015 release. While details are scant, the album will be the Iowa hard rock outfit’s first without guitarist Jim Root, whose departure was announced back in May.

As Blabbermouth reports, during the band’s recent North American tour, which did not feature Root, the band played a different cover song every night. Among the songs performed by the Des Moines group were Metallica’s Creeping Death, KISS’ Love Gun, and Judas Priest’s Heading Out To The Highway.

During the tour, which Root reportedly chose to sit out on in order to concentrate on writing music for the forthcoming new Slipknot album, Root was replaced by The Chelsea Smiles guitarist Christian Martucci – a decision that Stone Sour and Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor said “everybody was cool with”.

However, in the lead-up to Stone Sour confirming Root’s departure, the guitarist told fans on Instagram, “I’m not in that band anymore. Not my decision. Not happy about it.” In a recent interview with Music Feeds, Root said he was informed of his exit via phone call and is still unsure of why he was fired.

“I still haven’t talked to certain guys in that band, so I really don’t know what they were thinking or a hundred percent of the reason why they made the decision that they made,” he said. “I mean, it was basically put to me over a phone call and I thought that was pretty lame. Whatever, it is what it is. Onward and upward. I think I have a little bit of a different opinion on how music should be done anyway.”
