Tiësto Says He’s Better Than Daft Punk: “I’m Destroying Them Now”

Watch out, Daft Punk – Dutch house DJ Tiësto reckons your newest record ain’t that good and people are only pretending to like it because it’s “cool” to do so, saying, “I’m destroying them now. Sorry, Daft Punk.” Ouch.

Tiësto, or Tijs Michiel Verwest to his mum, told Huffington Post he’s not really feeling Random Access Memories, saying:

“It got so much attention because it’s so different and it’s an attitude album. It’s cool to like Daft Punk. Even if you’re not into the song, as soon as you hear [‘Get Lucky’], you see all the cool people go, ‘Oh yeah, this is cool, that’s my song,’ and they don’t really even enjoy it. But because it’s Daft Punk and they’re supposed to be cool and they had the amazing pyramid at Coachella a couple of years ago and the helmets — they’re fucking cool. But the music doesn’t deliver on the hype so much.”

But don’t just take Tiësto’s word for it – he’s surveyed the youth and they agree with him. The 44-year-old said he approached some girls dancing to Get Lucky at a party and asked them what they really thought about the song:

“I said, ‘Lemme ask you a question; do you really like this song?’ And they went quiet and were like, ‘Uh…it’s all right, it’s all right.’” That’s what I mean. Because it’s Daft Punk and we want to believe the hype; we are cool people so we have to think this is cool.”

The Maximal Crazy DJ is A-OK with Random Access Memories collaborator Giorgio Moroder, though, describing him as a “youth hero” and saying the 70-year-old producer came to one of his shows recently and the duo did shots together. The pair have plans to sit down and discuss making beautiful music together soon, with Tiesto saying, “I mean, he did a collaboration with Daft Punk, so why not with me?”

There you have it. Daft Punk out, Giorgio Moroder in. Who’s going to argue with the richest DJ in the world? Thanks, Tiësto.
