Tired Lion Announce Second Album ‘Breakfast For Pathetics’, Share New Single ‘Lie To Me’

Tired Lion have shared new single ‘Lie To Me’, announcing second album Breakfast for Pathetics will arrive this November.

A powerful, gritty grunge-rocker about the experience of being mansplained and a reassertion of control, ‘Lie To Me’ has been a frequent and popular live staple, leading to it being added to the new album’s tracklist.

It’s the second single to be released from the forthcoming album after frontwoman Sophie Hopes and co. returned with ‘Waterbed’ back in May – their first new track in two years.

Breakfast for Pathetics follows a fairly turbulent couple of years for Hopes and the band. After releasing debut album Dumb Days back in 2017, Hopes relocated from Perth to Brisbane to be closer to partner and producing collaborator Luke Boerdam of Violent Soho.

As a result, Hopes’ professional relationship with her bandmates couldn’t be maintained – which she says left her attempting to find a new sense of home.

Hopes says the new album is about that search – “Waving goodbye to family bandmates, friends and pets and navigating my way through depression and anxiety along the way. Waving goodbye to Perth and starting with nothing but a suitcase 5,000km away.”

Hopes recorded the new album over a year-long period at The Grove Studios with Boerdam, before being mixed by Scott Horscroft (DMA’S, The Presets). The songwriter says the music on album two was influenced by the likes of alt-rock legends like Pavement, Pixies and Archers of Loaf along with contemporaries like Speedy Ortiz and Diiv – “sonically interesting bands that had layers of sound with a slacker attitude”.

“I was able to experiment a lot. I’ve always felt pressure to finish a song as quickly as possible but doing it all on my lonesome I was able to try multiple variations, different choruses, different tempos and moods. I’d program weird drum beats and loop things for hours,” Hopes says.

“I had a lot of fun playing around with pedals trying to emulate my favourite bands. I’m a massive introvert, so it’s safe to say I was in my element and I really enjoyed an excuse not to leave the house. I was like. ‘Oh yeah, I can’t come to that. I’m working on my record, sorry.’”
