The Amity Affliction‘s ex-guitarist Troy Brady has cited health problems, a fear of flying and finances among his reasons for leaving the band.
Brady left the Queensland metalcore outfit last year after 11 years with the band. At the time he wrote a Facebook post saying, “it is time for me to step away.”
“It was a decision which solely wasn’t mine,” Brady elaborated while speaking to The Music Network eight months after his departure.
“It was something that we had to come to terms with on a personal and a business level.”
The guitarist further explained that his health was a large reason for leaving. He had worn away the cartilage in his ankles and knees and suffered a debilitating fear of flying. The latter has meant that Brady hasn’t got on a plane since his last show with the band in Brisbane in September of last year.
“My body was tired, traveling had become exhausting for me and everyone had grown aware of that,” he said.
“I think at times I was unpleasant to travel with.”
In addition to that he had a marijuana charge from 2003 which stopped him from entering the US meaning that he couldn’t tour with the band over there. Brady estimated that they played at least 75% of their shows in the US.
The Amity Affliction have now built a steady following in Australia and abroad. Their last LP Let The Ocean Take Me reached number one in Australia and cracked the top 40 in the US. However, the financial situation weighed the band down at times, according to Brady.
“There were certain unfortunate things that happened with The Amity Affliction. It was a career where certain tours don’t do as well and you end up with financial deficits. Music is taxed so hard it’s hard to keep up and make sure you’re above board.”
Despite that Brady has turned his attention to the business side of the industry, focussing his time on his Elevnth Records label which is now the home to Ratking and Void Of Vision among others.
The Amity Affliction are currently on the road in the US on the Vans Warped Tour with Asking Alexandria, Motion City Soundtrack and more.
