Big Scary are quite clearly film buffs, or at least the clip for their new single Organism would seem to suggest.
Channeling elements of David Lynch’s “Red Room” sequences from Twin Peaks, as well as the studiously exact single point perspective and long takes single shot sequences of Stanley Kubrick, the clip, co-directed by Shaun Garland and Big Scary’s own Tom Iansek, establishes a mood rather than tells a story, with the strange noir burlesque space of the clip extending the sonic world of the song into a visual mode.
Iansek himself is the main character of the piece, dancing in a dapper suit back and forth toward the camera while a host of glammed up extras and musos flank and surround him. Joined by a pair of space-chic retro dancers, and other half of Big Scary Jo Syme in a custom made gold-sequined track-suit, there is a lot of fun to be had in this cheeky video. Filmed in Fitzroy Town Hall in Melbourne, the shoot which saw a 29 member crew take over the space, has delivered some great results.
Having spent some focused time recently working on their upcoming album, the clip is a welcome reminder of what is to come. Currently finishing off work on the album, it promises to be another forward-thinking showcase of what the band and their medium of pop music are capable of. Currently touring the US, Europe and the UK from now until the years end, keep an eye out for news on the new album’s release.
