Adelaide rhyme-slinger Tkay Maidza is what’s known in the music industry as “blowing up”. Rather than knock on success’ door, she stomped right through it with her infectious track Brontosaurus, which followed up with a string of stellar, dance floor-ready bangers. While hanging around at BIGSOUND 2014, we managed to steal a few minutes from the young rapper to talk about why she’s the it-girl at BIGSOUND and her crazy year.
“It’s been so much better than I thought it would be,” explains Tkay. “Like, playing Splendour and stuff and Groovin The Moo, I was like, ‘No one’s gonna come watch me’. And then the crowds are bigger than I thought they would be, and I was like, ‘What the hell?’ And just releasing all this music, I was like, ‘Nah, no one’s gonna like it’. And it’s just gone some much better [than I thought], so I’m happy. It’s more than I wanted!”
With hits like Brontosaurus delivering her to a larger audience, we asked Tkay how she’s acclimated to performing in front of thousands. “It’s pretty scary. Before Splendour, I was literally crying. We were two days early and I was crying for those two days. I was like, ‘This is going to be horrible’, and everyone’s like, ‘Nah, you’ll be fine’, I was like, ‘Nah, I’m not gonna be fine’. I was crying until the point I went on stage… [then] I had fun, everyone liked it, so I had fun.”
As for the young rapper’s prodigious output, she says, “I have had eight songs finished since January and then I’ve just been writing more stuff and all the stuff that’s coming out now is just the stuff that I’ve been working on for months, and I’m just happy it’s finally out now. It was just funny because two songs came out within two hours of each other.”
Tkay is now one of the busiest up-and-comers in the country, with a trip to America on the books, which will see the Adelaide native hit up the famous CMJ Music Marathon. Tkay also promises even more music will soon find its way into the hands of fans, as well as a forthcoming club tour planned for November.
