It’s John Hughes goes goth youth in CHVRCHES video for Empty Threat, backing up the awesome hyper colour ’80s vibe of the track perfectly.
Nothing beats a coming of age story for a music video. Who can forget the iconic video for 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins? Well this has that same vibe, except this time it’s Lauren Mayberry and a gaggle of goth kids off to the water park. It sounds cliche, but with the music it’s just perfect and had this cynical reporter pumping their fist at their desk.
Directed by Austin Peters (Haim, Bastille) and filmed on location in Miami, this is one slice of delicious eye candy sure to sasify any fellow ’80s enthusiasts out there.
The latest track to be taken off the band’s critically acclaimed album Every Eye Open, speaking of the song’s writing process, multi-instrumentalist Iain Cook said that balance was a key consideration.
“Whenever we work on a new song, it’s of paramount importance that we find the right balance between the various elements in the track and instrumentation,” says Iain Cook. “Whether it’s the tension between brighter melodies and darker lyrics, or sparking synths and gritty production, it’s a signature of what we do. We worked hard to get the right combination of those things for Empty Threat, and in the end we managed to find the sweet spot that captures the essence of CHVRCHES.”
With Every Eye Open currently sitting pretty atop the charts the world over, it looks like all that’s left for CHVRCHES to do now is walk of triumphantly with a raised fist Breakfast Club style.
