Interview: Paul Kelly, Vika & Linda Bull Talk ‘The Merri Soul Sessions’

Australian music icon Paul Kelly and Bull sisters Vika and Linda will tour the country in January and February, behind the release of the Kelly-led collaborative album The Merri Soul Sessions. Kelly and the Bull sisters recently sat down with Music Feeds to discuss the album’s recording process, their talented collaborators, and how the project came to life.

“It started with Vika singing Sweet Guy Love with the band over the last few years, and we thought we should record that version,” Kelly revealed. “So then we just added some songs around it and invited a few other singers in, and it sort just grew. I started off thinking it might be an EP, then I thought it might be a mini album, then we ended up with a proper album.”

Aside from the Bull sisters, The Merri Soul Sessions album also features Kira Puru, Clairy Browne and recent ARIA Award-winner Dan Sultan. “We worked with Dan’s mum. We’ve known him since he was three. He used to sit at the end of a bench at a cafe we all worked and played his plastic ukulele or guitar,” Linda revealed.

Paul Kelly’s The Merri Soul Sessions album is set for release out on the 12th December, and will also be performed at West Coast Blues N Roots Festival.
