Jack Colwell came into Music Feeds Studio fully loaded, with a string section and that silver-throated voice of his ready to go. After a quick sit-down and playing through his latest single, Far From View, Jack graced us with the sprawling baroque of C.O.A.T. Like Far From View, the song comes from a tradition of haunting and cinematic-sounding chamber pop that simultaneously channels Scott Walker, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Antony and the Johnsons.
Sitting down with Jack for a quick interview, he regaled us with the story of how he met current touring partner and former Killing Heidi frontwoman Ella Hooper, an epic story that involves Homebake, a dumping, a VIP area, New Zealand songstress Kimbra, stolen rider food, and $10 for a sandwich.
“When I first met Ella that very fateful day at Homebake, I was pretty starstruck,” Jack told us, “because when I first started learning bass guitar as a nine or ten-year-old kid on the Northern Beaches, I remember saving up all my money and going to buy Reflector at Big W, a very rock and roll experience. Weir and Mascara were some of the first songs I ever learnt.”
