Rarely do you get to hang with heavy metal royalty, but spend long enough chilling at Sydney’s Olympic Park on the day of Soundwave 2014 and eventually you’ll run into the likes of Pepper Keenan, formerly of trailblazers Corrosion of Conformity and currently a member of heavy metal supergroup Down, whom he formed with Pantera‘s Phil Anselmo, Eyehategod’s Jimmy Bower, and Kirk Windstein and Todd Strange of Crowbar back in 1991.
“Australians have always been good to Down. This is like our third time here. It takes a while to get here, but it’s worth the trip,” Pepper told us, before getting into some live performance logistics. “For this thing we’ve got like a one-hour set, so it’s just like drop the hammer and go. It’s kind of a good thing, and we’ve got a shit load of friends here, so that’s always good.”
We finished up with Pepper by asking him the all-important desert island question. So which band would Pepper listen to for the rest of his life if he could only choose one? The mighty ZZ Top.
