“If you want to know the situation, when something dies it can never come back“, sing Papa vs Pretty on their new single, To Do, the latest taste of the band’s upcoming album, White Deer Park. In keeping with the themes of the lyrics, the band have decided to use their new music video to raise awareness of the pending dredging of the Great Barrier Reef, a cause close to the hearts of the band members.
The clip, which consists of a stunning collection of official Great Barrier Reef footage, opens by laying out the situation very clearly:
“On January 31st, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the body with the role of protecting the GBR Marine Park and the World Heritage Area will make the decision whether to approve the expansion of the Abbot Point Coal Mine Port, which has already been given preliminary approval by the Federal Government.
“This expansion would involve the dredging of approximately 3,000,000 cubic metres of previously undisturbed seabed from within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and disposing of the dredge material within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.”
“We’re not usually a political band,” says bassist Angus Gardiner, “but we do think it’s hugely important that everyone thinks about and engages with the issues that are important.” The band have urged fans and those concerned about one of the planet’s most precious natural systems to sign the Save The Reef petition or contact the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority directly through GetUp!
