‘100 Warm Tunas’ Is Predicting The Hottest 100, And Kendrick Lamar Is In The Lead

Update: The winner of the Hottest 100 of 2017 has been announced

ORIGINAL STORY: Hottest 100 prediction site 100 Warm Tunas is back for another year, and the first round of results from its annual vote-tracking are very interesting indeed.

Created by Sydney software engineer Nick Whyte, 100 Warm Tunas calls itself “the internet’s most accurate prediction of triple j‘s Hottest 100″, and it’s being updated daily in the lead up to the countdown using Hottest 100 votes which have been posted to Instagram.

Whyte successfully predicted eight of the songs which appeared in last year’s top 10, and as of today Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘HUMBLE.’ is way out in front in the 2017 countdown, while Gang Of Youths have three songs in the top 10.

“At the moment the 2017 countdown results are looking more reliable so far,” Whyte tells Music Feeds.

“Hopefully it will be able to predict the outright winner. Of course things can change as we’re only a week into voting, however Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’ is ahead of second place by six per cent. To put it in perspective, the two top places in 2016 were only marginally different — around 0.6 per cent.”

Whyte says this year’s 100 Warm Tunas will once again be found by trawling through Instagram hashtags like #Hottest100.

“Similarly to last year, the ranking works by crawling Instagram for images tagged with a handful of hashtags, and extracts the track names from the images of votes that people have uploaded and aggregates the results,” he says.

The results are collected, optimised, and processed multiple times each day, and Whyte is even keeping an up-to-date playlist of the year’s frontrunners, which you can check out below.

Triple j‘s Hottest 100 of 2017 will be revealed on Saturday, 27th January, after triple j moved the countdown away from Australia Day.
