A new summer festival dubbed Beachlife will make its way to Surfers Paradise this January, featuring performances from Grammy Award-winning EDM producer Skrillex and hip-hop stars ASAP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa. The event is the brainchild of promoter Billy Cross.
Skrillex is set to perform on the first day of the two-day event, Saturday, 4th January, with Wiz Khalifa and ASAP Rocky set to play the following day. The festival is the first major commercial music event to be staged at Surfers Paradise and is expected to attract 20,000 punters.
Speaking to Fairfax, Cross explained how he brought locals over to the idea. “We’ve limited the hours from 3pm-10pm so we don’t have noise issues and people can still enjoy the beach for most of the day before we fence the arena off,” he said.
Cross added that the event will be of benefit to the local economy, saying “When you look at famous beaches across the world, Copacabana or even Bondi, they all allow a degree of commerciality. We’ve been lobbying the council behind closed doors for a long time so this is a major coup.”
The Gold Coast City Council are now looking at bringing more commercial events to the area, which often hosts volleyball comps and Schoolies. “The Surfers Paradise traders I have spoken to are very excited about this and it couldn’t come at a better time,” said Cross.
Skrillex has already been announced as headliner and curator for Shore Thing 2013, with Khalifa and Rocky set to headline Perth’s Origin NYE as well as a co-headlining show at Melbourne Festival Hall.
A full announcement for Beachlife is expected on Tuesday. Early bird tickets are on sale now through the official website, priced at $89. A crew of 12 lifeguards, 40 police officers and 120 security guards are expected to be patrolling the day.
