Father John Misty Has Covered Ryan Adams’ Cover Of Taylor Swift, As Lou Reed

This is the very definition of meta. Yesterday Ryan Adams dropped his cover album of Taylor Swift’s 1989 and now Joshua Tillman, better known as Father John Misty, has covered two of those of those (already covered) songs, adopting the style of The Velvet Underground.

Done with just a hint of sarcasm, Tillman popped a cover of Blank Space online with the description, “My reinterpretation of the classic Ryan Adams album 1989.” He then followed that up with Welcome To New York calling it an “ongoing tribute” to Adams’ album which was originally said to have been done in the style of The Smiths and Bruce Springsteen.

His versions are incredibly lo-fi, sounding as if they’ve been recorded straight into Garage Band, as Tillman sings with a Lou Reed-esque drawl. For a parody, and it’s hard to tell sometimes with Father John Misty if it is one, Tillman has actually done a brilliant job, nailing an incredibly convoluted cover that makes little to no sense on paper.

Things are just continuing to get more meta too with US television writer Jake Fogelnest covering Tillman’s cover of a cover in the style of metal machine music which is brilliantly comedic.

Tay Tay is a big supporter of Adams’ covers and while she is yet to respond to these new covers we’re sure Tillman will be strutting across the stage with her on her 1989 world tour in now time.

In fact, Father John Misty is in Australia for Meredith Festival and Fairgrounds at the same time Tay is here for her all-conquering stadium tour. Coincidence?
