Freddie Gibbs Allegedly Targeted In Brooklyn Shooting

American rapper Freddie Gibbs was reportedly the target of a shooting in Brooklyn early Tuesday morning that left two members of his entourage injured.

Reports the New York Post, the shooting occurred outside a record store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where Gibbs had just performed. Gibbs was sitting inside a black SUV when the gunman approached the vehicle and fired several shots inside.

“They tried to kill Tupac. They tried to kill me,” Gibbs told The Post outside the club. “I’m still alive.” Asked why he would be targeted, the rapper replied, “I’m Freddie Gibbs. They tried to kill me, but I’m still alive.”

Gibbs said he fled the car and ran to seek safety back at Rough Trade, watching the assailant fleeing the scene. While he was left unscathed, one member of Gibbs’ entourage was hit in the leg during the attack, and another in the hand. Both are expected to survive their wounds.

According to police, the suspected shooter was seen on security video inside Rough Trade, standing with Gibbs’ entourage attempting to blend in. “At one point, he [the shooter] was standing right next to you,” an investigator told Gibbs. “The opportunity was there if he wanted to shoot.”

“He was standing around you guys all night. He was stalking you guys. We can tell on camera, he wanted it to look like he knew you, but it’s clear he didn’t. When you guys left, he was waiting for you outside.”

When presented with footage of the suspect shooter and another man seen with him, Gibbs reportedly said he did not recognise either of them. No arrests have been made.

Gibbs, was in Australia last year as part of OutsideIn Festival and also featured on a rap reworking of Australian producer Flume‘s Holdin On. Earlier this year Gibbs released his collaborative studio album with California producer Madlib, titled Piñata. It features contributions from Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown and many more.
