Lorde Breaks Alanis Morissette’s US Chart Record

It seems like New Zealand teenage sensation Lorde‘s reign is only just beginning, with the 16-year-old’s breakthrough hit Royals taking out the title for longest run at the top of Billboard’s Alternative chart for a female, knocking off the previous title holder, Alanis Morissette.

Lorde, or Ella Yelich-O’Connor to her mum, had already broken records as the first female to top the chart since singer-songwriter Tracy Bonham did so in 1996 with her smash Mother Mother.

Now with Royals sitting pretty in the number one position for 6 weeks straight, she’s taken Alanis’s crown away from her – the Jagged Little Pill hitmaker had the number one song for 5 weeks in 1995 with her bitter ode to an ex, You Oughta Know.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Royals has now sold 991,000 digital downloads to date. Lorde is surprised by the reaction to the song, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s weird, because obviously when I wrote it I had no idea it would be a big deal or anything. I just wrote something that I liked and that I thought was cool.”

Lorde has just dropped her brand-new single Team (below) from her upcoming debut full-length Pure Heroine, which will be released locally on Friday, 27th September and followed by a run of headlining shows around the country.
