Matt Damon Just Explained His Henry Rollins-Inspired ‘EuroTrip’ Cameo

Written by Mike Hohnen on July 20, 2016

Matt Damon’s recent Reddit AMA has proven to be a surprisingly gripping read. The Hollywood actor was open and articulate about everything he’s done in his career from Good Will Hunting right up until The Martian. This includes his bizarre cameo in the 2004 coming-of-age bro-comedy EuroTrip, which is the goss we totally forgot we wanted.

As it turns out, Damon’s involvement in the film was a circumstance of pure conspiracy on behalf of the universe, with EuroTrip creators Alec Shaffer, Jeff Berg, and Dave Mandell actually knowing Damon from his college days.

“So EuroTrip was written by three guys I went to college with, Alec Shaffer, Jeff Berg, and Dave Mandell. And the three of them are three of the best comedy writers in the world,” explains Damon.

“I was in Prague shooting The Brothers Grimm, we were in rehearsals, and I had a wig in that movie, and so Alec and Dave and Jeff were making EuroTrip and they said “Will you come play this, you know, Howard Rollins kind of insane, bad version of a suburban, you know, punk band guy?” And I said “Yea, I’m in Prague”.

So there you have it, the party scene from the start EuroTrip is actually a Czech house party, and don’t think we (or Reddit for that matter) missed that Howard/ Henry Rollins slip up. But we digress…

“So I showed up and I’m sitting there, and I’m like “I’m wearing a wig, just shave my head, let’s just go for it.” and we did it, and put a bunch of piercings all over”

And so Damon went hell-for-leather. The actual song itself was written by one of Damon’s “college roommates brothers”, from the band Lustra who appears onstage as the guitarist alongside Damon, “So it was kind of a family affair.”

Those who remember the film will recall Matt Damon rocking his best Howard Henry Rollins and belting out an original score from the film dubbed ‘Scotty Doesn’t Know’. The song has remained in most of our heads since 2004, and it is 100% in your head again now having just read this.

Oh? It’s not? Well then…
