‘Montage Of Heck’ Director Defends Decision To Release Kurt Cobain Home Recordings

The tracklist for the soundtrack to Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck has been released and with it director Brett Morgen has defended the decision to release home-recordings by Cobain.

The soundtrack to the HBO documentary, Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, will feature tracks recorded by Cobain prior to his death in 1994 that have never surfaced anywhere else. Morgen sorted through over 200 hours of audio on 108 cassettes to formulate the final cuts and decided to include tracks recorded solely by Cobain opting not to include Nirvana material recorded with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

Speaking with Rolling Stone Morgen conceded that he understands there will be criticism surrounding the “morality of putting out unfinished work,” but defended his decision to release it.

“I know that is a criticism that will be lobbied against the project. But just like the Bootleg Series furthers your understanding of Bob Dylan’s process, I find that Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings furthers not just our understanding of his process but represents yet another angle, another side of Kurt — an artistic outlet that he was not necessarily able to work with in the context of a three-piece band,” he said.

“It’s not scraps and discarded, insignificant material. It really is furthering our understanding of one of the most significant artists of our time.”

According to Morgen it was all approved by Cobain’s daughter and the co-director of the documentary, Frances Cobain.

The album, which will come in both a 13 track standard edition and 31 song deluxe, features a cover of The Beatles’ And I Love Her as well as solo version of Nirvana tracks Been A Son and Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle. Some of Cobain’s darkest moments are also included by way of Aberdeen which depicts an early suicide attempt.

An early demo of Nirvana song Sappy has already been released while the rest is due to drop on 13th November. You can see the whole tracklisting below.
