One Direction Accused Of Plagiarising The Who, Fans Exposed To “Old Music”

The world of One Direction fandom has exploded after a reviewer compared their single Best Song Ever to The Who‘s classic 1971 track Baba O’Riley, unintentionally and hilariously exposing teenage 1D fans to music that was released last century.

The fuss all started over at Clickmusic, when a reviewer suggested that “someone should call Trading Standards over the song title as 1D sterilise The Who’s Baba O’Riley“.

Never mind that 1D producer Julian Bunetta had already spoken about the similarities between the two tracks, telling MTV, “At a certain point we recognised it had the same type of intro.” You can check out a comparison of the tracks below.

Fans of the boy band were called to arms, with Twitter exploding into a flood of vitriol and #DontTouchBestSongEver trending. The teens somehow decided that The Who, whoever the hell they are, were going to sue One Direction and were going to delete Best Song Ever from the internet. Justin Bieber fans even got involved, with the Beliebers deciding they would have to band together with the 1D crew to save the song…by tweeting.

There’s something so ridiculous about One Direction fans making statements like “The Who is just jealous of 1D bc they won’t become as legendary as them #true” and “WHO THE HELL IS THE WHO EVEN?? Like wtf? No one even knows you” that it’s entirely hilarious – we’d recommend having a good sift through the #DontTouchBestSongEver tweets for your own lulz.

The brouhaha was starting to get a bit cray cray when thankfully Pete Townshend himself stepped in, revealing that he’s actually happy about the tribute:

“I like the single. I like One Direction. The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we’ve all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don’t mean great music – not always.”

And with that, teenage girls considered the situation resolved, deciding that those old fogeys The Who probably weren’t that bad and should be allowed to live, while we here at Music Feeds went back to looking at photos of bored dads at One Direction concerts.
