Silverchair Drummer Starts New Project, Releases Debut Single

Daniel Johns isn’t the only member of the dearly departed Silverchair who has been keeping busy. In a recent interview with The Herald Sun, drummer and founding member Ben Gillies revealed details of the new project, as well as the first musical offering.

Writing and gigging as a solo performer under the moniker Bento, Gillies admitted that “Silverchair taking an indefinite hiatus is a blessing in disguise because it’s given me a kick up the arse,” adding that “it meant I had to do something with all the musical ideas I had filled my phone up with over the years.”

Gillies worked hand in hand with Johns for the band’s first two albums, but following that, Johns took the creative reigns over the band. Though his new project has given him total control over the music, Gillies admitted that it was at times overwhelming, especially when it came to performing: “The other scary thing was singing,” he said, laughing. “I did actually do a couple of practices in front of the mirror before we shot the video, to see what I looked like singing.”

The drummer also discussed how this may or may not effect any potential future plans for Silverchair: “I see this as a long-term career move…Whatever happens with Silverchair in the future will be exciting, but this is my baby, I don’t see it as a side project.”

Hot on the heels of the interview came the first single from Bento. News of the track came after a post from the Silverchair Facebook, linking to a website. You can check out Diamond Days below, and expect to hear plenty more from Bento.
