Australian singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko will perform at Sydney’s March In May rally tomorrow, which starts in Belmore Park at 1pm.
Social commentator and writer Van Badham will join Blasko as guest MC for the rally, which will seek to voice public concerns over the policies of Prime Minister Tony Abbott‘s Liberal government.
Other speakers include David Ritter (CEO of Greenpeace Australia Pacific), Ian Rintoul (Refugee Action Coalition Spokesperson) and journalist Antony Loewenstein.
Then, from 4pm, the second-ever “Rap Against Abbott” event will take place at The Lansdowne Hotel in Chippendale.
The event will feature local artists Mikoen, P. Smurf, Swarmy, DJ Cost, plus spoken word segments from Omar Musa and Sarah Conner. The event is being hosted by Rivals and will be free to the public.
A core focus issue at this weekend’s events is the federal budget which was unveiled earlier this week. The government’s fiscal plan outlined cuts to education, arts funding and healthcare. Other issues the rally will address include the rights of asylum seekers, the realities of climate change and the need for continuing disability support.
March In May follows on from the recent March In March event, which saw over 110,000 Australians rally together across 33 locations to express their disdain for the policies of the current government. British musician and activist Billy Bragg also performed (footage below) at the Sydney event.
March In May will also take place in Adelaide and Perth tomorrow. The Adelaide event will take place in Victoria Square at 11:30am, the Perth event will begin in Russell Square Park at 12pm.
