With thousands of eager Splendour In The Grass attendees now making their way to North Byron Parklands, local police have issued a warning to punters to be on their best behaviour, especially regarding drugs and fence jumping.
As The Northern Star reports, Acting Superintendent Gary Cowan says police will be on constant lookout for wayward activity, and want punters to enjoy themselves safely.
“Police will be targeting illegal drug use and supply, underage drinking, alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour,” Superintendent Cowan says.
“We will take appropriate action against anyone who chooses to commit crime, breach Splendour’s terms and conditions, or behave in an offensive manner.”
Police say they reprimanded 271 people for possessing drugs at Splendour In The Grass 2014, and they don’t want to see a repeat this year.
“Anyone planning to bring illegal drugs to the parklands should expect to get caught – in addition to uniformed and plain-clothes police, drug detection dogs will again be patrolling the festival,” Superintendent Cowan says.
“Our primary focus will be to stop people taking illegal drugs into the festival.”
As for their warning for fence jumpers, police have one simple message: “The event is sold out. If you do not have a ticket, do not come.”
Splendour’s high visibility police operation will see the Dog Unit, Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group and Traffic and Highway Patrol teams assist officers from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command and other nearby commands.
