BBC4 is airing new documentary People’s History of Pop, and held in its hot little hands is some unreleased David Bowie material.
“The programme is still being made, but we can confirm that there will be some rare and special Bowie material in it,” a BBC spokeswoman told NME. From what we can gather, a never heard before demo of Bowie’s 1969 hit single Space Oddity, which features different lyrics to the original release, will be officially aired on the show.
Other Bowie goodies that will be aired on the show include his 1972 comedic tune The Laughing Gnome, a specific version that features sped-up vocals and cussing, as well as a 1969 demo of My Way by Frank Sinatra.
The host of the show, Danny Baker, gained access to a large catalogue of Bowie’s unreleased material, although some of it has already been bootlegged and does exist online. The bulk of the show’s content, however, will be compiled from fan memorabilia. As explained in a statement about the show:
“The producers have previously appealed to music fans around the UK to upload details about their most precious music memorabilia to the series website at www.bbc.co.uk/mygeneration. Currently over 3,400 items – including photos, videos and audio of their musical treasures – have been uploaded. Episodes three and four will focus on the two decades from mid 70s to mid 90s, so the programme-makers would love to hear from people around the country who have treasured mementos from that time.”
The first episode, aired in April, covered the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The second episode, airing in July, will cover David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Marc Bolan and Northern Soul, as the series works its way episode by episode towards the ’90s.
Also apparently waiting patiently in the David Bowie song vault is an unreleased album named Toy, recorded in 2001, as well as a second edition of box-sets following his 2015 release of unreleased material from 1969-1973.
People’s History of Pop episode 2 screens in July.
