Love Letter To A Record: Dan Vogl On Gang Of Youths’ ‘Go Farther In Lightness’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Dan Vogl – Gang Of Youths Go Farther In Lightness

Has it only been two years? I feel as though this record has soundtracked the last ten years of my life. At least I can already attach memories to moments in time before I even heard these songs. Where do I start? Gangies hit the mark in so many different ways. The production, the composition, the arrangement all grouped with lyrical depth, complexity and rawness. This record packs it all.

Go Farther In Lightness is a true masterpiece of dynamics. The ebbs and flows of hard-hitting powerful rock’n roll, and the soft gentle string arrangements and carefully considered piano. ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?’ instantly inserts a colossal amount of energy deep into my core. It is an instant mood shifter, happiness creator and overall good vibe promoter. The title track ‘Go Farther In Lightness’ is a short ditty but I find myself coming back to it time and time again wanting more and more and continue singing the hook indefinitely. The highlight for me is ‘The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows’ which allows me to open up, release my demons, my doubts, my insecurities and blast them out into a ball of fire. Whether is in my car alone or with thousands of others at a GOY concert, I am able to give back the energy which I receive.

To Dave, and the rest of the band, you are truly one of a kind and an enormous source of inspiration.

Thank you for it all,

Say Yes to Life.

Dan Vogl.
