Taylor Swift Reveals Identity Behind Characters In Her Song ‘Betty’

Taylor Swift’s folklore has been in our lives for two whole weeks now and what a two weeks it’s been. One of the country-er sounding tracks on the album, ‘Betty’ has seen a tonne of fan speculation going on though.

Now, T Swift herself has shed some light on the track. During a recent radio interview (which you can listen to below) she said, “I’ve always loved that in music you can kind of slip into different identities, and you can sing from other people’s perspectives. So that’s what I did on this one.”

She said the song is written from the perspective of a teenage boy who had just lost the love of his life.

“Everybody makes mistakes, everybody really messes up sometimes,” she said.

“I named all the characters in this story after my friends’ kids, and I hope you like it.”

That last quote from Taylor Swift confirms some fan theories. Swift uses a few names in the song. There’s obviously Betty, but the other characters: James and Inez have the same names as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ daughters.

Swift has been pals with the couple for some time now, so fans speculated that perhaps Betty was the name of the couple’s third daughter who was born back in October last year.

It’s not the first time James Reynolds has been involved in a Taylor Swift song. Her voice can be heard in the opening of Swift’s ‘Gorgeous’.
