Get ready to turn it up to 11 because forty years after heavy metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap hit cinemas, a sequel is getting close to hitting our screens.
We already knew original director Rob Reiner and actor/writers Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer would be back on deck for Spinal Tap II, but now, more details of the long awaited sequel have been announced, including a handful of celebrity cameos and a shoot date.
This Is Spinal Tap – “These go to 11”
Filming on the second instalment of the cult classic is due to begin in February of 2024, with the fictional riffsters Spinal Tap to be joined onscreen by real-life music legends Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks.
As Reiner revealed on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast, the sequel will mimic the style of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz, the legendary documentary chronicling the farewell tour of Canadian-American rock group, The Band.
In addition to directing, Reiner will also return in the role of documentary filmmaker Martin Di Bergi. In This Is Spinal Tap, Di Bergi joined the hapless English hard rock group, Spinal Tap, on their 1982 United States concert tour. McKean, Guest and Shearer played Spinal Tap’s core members, guitarist/vocalists David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel, and bass player Derek Smalls, respectively.
The This Is Spinal Tap II was originally slated to be released next year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the OG movie, before a bunch of Hollywood strikes this year laid waste to film and TV schedules across the board.
With the movie now shooting in February, an updated release date has yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you posted.
