Sydney-based rising stars Okenyo have unveiled the shimmering video for their new single, Broken Chest. The stylish video came into being via a Pozible crowd-funding campaign and was directed by Sydney-based filmmaker Laura Scrivano.
Zindzi Okenyo comes from a theatre background, turning to music after a case of heartbreak. She quickly went about assembling a band to bring her beat-driven, eclectic and beautifully melodic musical dreams to life, sourcing inspiration from artists like Grace Jones and Beyonce.
“It’s like looking in the front face of the neo soul beatsy hybrid lovechild of Janelle Monae, Frank Ocean, D’Angelo, DMX and the tightest live band you’ll see in this human lifetime,” said Jinja Safari frontman Marcus Azon when asked to describe Okenyo, with whom his band recently toured.
Readers can check out the video for Broken Chest, which depicts the journey of “a woman, through the underworld and out the other side, emerging strong, powerful and reborn — a new Amazon,” below, and can download the track for themselves via iTunes from Friday, 22nd November.
Okenyo will also be delighting fans with their first ever headline show on Friday, 22nd November at Upstairs Beresford in Sydney. Readers can check below for all ticketing details.
