With the news that legendary hip hop duo Outkast are reforming and headlining this year’s Coachella Festival, as well as New York’s Governors Ball, speculation is now brewing that the twosome will announce an Australian tour date, possibly gracing the Splendour In The Grass 2014 stage with their presence.
Andre ’3000′ Benjamin and Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton made a statement on the newly reactivated official Outkast website and social media channels, announcing a 40-date, festival-only international tour during the US spring/summer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.
Big Boi stated that it was “an honour” to still be making music together. “Don’t just think outside the box, know that there is no box. I’m looking forward to rocking the stage with my Bro Ski and to all the fans – stank you smelly much, this is for y’all!”
The timing of the tour certainly allows for a Splendour appearance, and the calendar highlight is no stranger to sharing newly reformed classic acts with Coachella. In 2012, a freshly reunited At The Drive In took on the headlining duties at Splendour after playing Coachella just three months prior, whereas in 2011, Britpop legends Pulp headlined Splendour before playing the American festival in 2012.
Big Boi was strongly rumoured to play last year’s installment of the Aussie festival favourite, with the man himself tweeting “Im Doing a tour in Australia in July, holla at ya people” but then failing to materialise. Perhaps his calendar was just a year out?
Splendour In The Grass is likely to drop a first lineup announcement in late April, so until then, go and borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbour, practice shaking it like a polaroid picture, and keep it set to the Feeds for all your Splendour news first.
