Apple Announces iPhone 5, New iPod Touch & iPod Nano Devices

Apple has announced its new iPhone 5 and iPod touch/Nano devices this morning at a media event held at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The new phone is equipped with a new A6 processor, LTE broadband (faster internet) a 4-inch retina display packed in to the thinnest iPhone design yet at around 7.6 mm think.

The camera has also been updated to an 8 megapixel iSight® camera, which means clearer images and face-time video capabilites of up to 720p HD. The new dock connector might annoy some people as it’s changed from previous generation models, the days of being able to grab any old iPod cable off your mate for charging might be over.

The battery life of the phone has now been extended to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 8 hours of 3G talk time, 30 hours of video, or 225 hours of stand-by time, though it’s hard to imagine anyone putting the device down for longer then 10 minutes in this day and age of social networking and communication.

iPhone 5 introduces new enhanced audio features including a “beam-forming, directional microphone system for higher quality sound” or in other words, better phone speaker and headphones than the crappy ones you used to get, with Apple now branding them as EarPods, boasting a more natural fit and increased durability, and an incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones.

The new iPod touch has had similar upgrades, especially in the audio department. It shared the same 4-inch screen, but now looks more like the new iPod Nano range then the iPhone, possibly to start branding them in the iPod category and giving the iPhone a chance to be marketed as its own stand alone device. You can now choose a range of colours, like the Nano, and a wrist strap is now included on the back.
