There are some pretty uncanny parallels between the current state of reality and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest semi-auto-biographical sitcom, Young Rock. In the NBC show, the wrestler-turned-actor harkens back to various stages of his life as he runs for president in 2032.
That aspect of the show began as a totally fictional plot device, as in 2018 he struck down rumours that he’d be running for president of the United States in 2020. Now, in a new interview with USA Today, he’s not entirely putting that idea to rest.
“I would consider a presidential run in the future if that’s what the people wanted,” he said.
“Truly I mean that, and I’m not flippant in any way with my answer. That would be up to the people… So I would wait, and I would listen. I would have my finger on the pulse, my ear to the ground.”
The Rock, a registered Independent, has a bit of a personal history with US politics. In 2000, he spoke at the National Republican Convention and in that same year, he attended the National Democratic Convention.
In September, he officially endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the presidency, posting a video to Twittter where he said “… as a registered Independent for years now with centrist ideologies, I do feel that Vice President Biden and Senator Harris are the best choice to lead our country, and I am endorsing them to become President, and Vice President, of our United States.”
He even “cried a tear or two – or ten” when the pair won the presidency last year.
