Rider Spoke

Do you like cycling and unusual experiences? Looking for an adventure and something different to do in February? – Rider Spoke is for you.

Produced by the internationally acclaimed, UK based, urban gamers, Blast Theory, Rider Spoke is a unique cycling event which mixes theatre and location game play with state of the art technology.

Rider Spoke premiered as part of the BITE Festival, Barbican, London and has since been presented in Athens, Brighton Festival and the Budapest Autumn Festival.

Riders are invited to take a cycling journey through the streets and lane ways of The Rocks. Equipped with a touchscreen computer, riders search for an undiscovered hiding place, record their thoughts and reflections and move on to glimpse traces of other players.

Players can either bring their own bike or use bikes provided. After an introduction and safety briefing, a Nokia N800J computer is mounted on the handlebars and an earphone providing live verbal instruction and questions gets the rider started.

Beautifully crafted imagery using motifs drawn from Mexican paintings, sailor tattoos and fluttering swallows adorn the computer screen to show available hiding places with prefab houses indicating places where others have hidden.

Blast Theory, renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous groups using interactive media, creates groundbreaking new forms of performance and interactive art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting. Rider Spoke continues Blast Theory’s fascination with how games and evolving communication technologies are creating new social spaces. It invites the public to become co-authors and a visible manifestation of the piece as they cycle through the streets of The Rocks.

Become a part of one of the most exciting, new performance pieces this February with Blast Theory and discover a whole new adventure in The Rocks.
