10 Best Metal Songs Of All Time According To Cancer Bats

Toronto hardcore punks Cancer Bats are getting up to no good this September and October, with their Destroy Australia Tour featuring Melbourne rockers High Tension kicking off this week. To celebrate we got Scott from the band to give us the 10 best metal songs of all time.

1. Slayer – Postmortem

To me this song has one of the best intro Riffs of all time. I think Tom Araya’s Banshee Scream is even better in this song than Angel Of Death.

2. Megadeth – In My Darkest Hour

One of the best songs written around a broken hearted Suicide note. Slow melodic brooding metal that leads to a fast and technical thrash outro. A perfect soundtrack for helping get through all the bullshit I dealt with in high school!

3. Sepultura – Refuse / Resist

Easily one of the coolest and heaviest intro/outros in all of heavy music. Badass political lyrics written from a real 3rd world perspective.

4. Anthrax – Room For One More

So many people will say Among the Living is quintessential Anthrax, but I got into metal in the 90s and John Bush’s amazing vocal hooks and their modern metal riffs on Sound Of White Noise were what got me into this band and man I love this song!

5. Entombed – They

This is when Entombed started to be a straight up Death ‘n’ Roll band and boy I was Hooked! Amazing groove and riffs. I remember when I bought this album for some reason the song title alone drew me to listen to this song first and has always been a classic for me!

Entombed - They

6. Suicidal Tendencies – Get Whacked

So much better than any cliche thrash being put out in the 90s – Lights Camera Revolution is one of ST’s best albums and such a perfect mixture of melody with fast, technical thrash guitar and Mike Muirs tongue in cheek lyrics.

Suicidal Tendencies - Get Whacked

7. Strapping Young Lad – Underneath the Waves

The album City literally blew my mind when I first heard it. It was so crazy and different and crushing I didn’t even know how to take it when I first heard it. had to put a Canadian band on here and really with Devin Townsend and Gene Hoglan shredding together they are the perfect metal band and this song is one of their best.

8. Testament – Trail Of Tears

Probably the greatest metal ballad of all time, from one of my top ten metal albums – Low. seriously incredible guitar playing by Eric Peterson and James Murphy.

Testament - Trail of Tears

9. Machine Head – The Rage To Overcome

Probably the best metal band to start out of the mid 90s – Combining the best bits of Pantera and Biohazard – Burn My Eyes is a perfect album and of course I’m gonna love a song where there’s at least 500 pinch harmonics all over it!

Machine Head - The Rage to Overcome

10. Danzig – Until You Call On The Dark

Danzig 4 is one of the most underrated Danzig records and I’ve always loved it the most. the video for this song is so dark and has one of the best Danzig Riffs ever in my opinion. When we toured with them this song was so badass and heavy Every night and I couldn’t have been more stoked to headbang along with it!
