Gabriella Cohen’s new single ‘Frangelico Dreams’ is pop music of a 1960s vintage.
Cohen wrote ‘Frangelico Dreams’ while reading Brian Wilson’s memoir, I Am Brian Wilson. The track is a fitting tribute to the early days of Wilson’s band, the Beach Boys, with Cohen’s jangling guitars and immediately addictive vocal melodies conjuring an image of sunshine, polaroids and sepia.
‘Frangelico Dreams’ is taken from Cohen’s upcoming third album, which the artist primarily self-produced and recorded. Cohen did, however, leave her solitude to work on a few tracks with fellow Brisbanites Sam Cromack (Ball Park Music), JB Paterson and Chaos Magick Studios personnel, Matthew Malone and Xavier Butler.
Cohen has been one of Australia’s most underrated artists since emerging with her solo project more than half a decade ago. Her debut album, Full Closure and No Details, came out via Dot Dash Recordings in 2016. She followed up with the excellent Pink is the Colour of Unconditional Love in 2018, which was released internationally by Brooklyn Label Captured Tracks, home to DIIV, Wild Nothing and formerly Mac Demarco.
Pitchfork commended Cohen’s shrewd incorporation of “bluesy psychedelia, languid surf-rock, and Brazilian rhythms” on Pink is the Colour of Unconditional Love. This impressive integration continues on ‘Frangelico Dreams’.
