Indie pop songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hein Cooper is back with the new EP, Turbulent Heart.
2021 is the year Mollymook will finally leave its mark on Australian rock music. After references to the NSW South Coast town featured prominently in the lyrics to You Am I’s excellent, ‘The Waterboy’, Music Feeds is pleased to premiere the new EP from Mollymook’s own, Hein Cooper.
Cooper’s elegant and melodic indie pop songs are inspired by everyone from Jeff Buckley and James Blake to Radiohead, Ben Howard, Bon Iver and Coldplay. Along with Turbulent Heart‘s title track, the singles ‘Pretend’ and ‘Higher’ have all received airtime on Triple J. In reference to ‘Turbulent Heart’, Home and Hosed‘s Declan Byrne said, “it just beams out of the speakers in a way that can’t be manufactured.”
Cooper recorded the EP with producer Jarryd Shuker in Montreal, Canada. Having recently become a married man, Turbulent Heart comprises the most confident and honest songwriting of Cooper’s career. “All of a sudden, I found myself in a position where I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t be weak anymore, because now I’m living so close to someone who I love,'” Cooper said in a statement.
There’s also an erudite touch to the EP, with ‘Higher’ referencing Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and ‘Turbulent Heart’ including a nod to Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Turbulent Heart is out on Friday, 13th August through Nettwerk Records.
