Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
Here are their love letters to records that forever changed their lives.
David De La Hoz, Belle Haven – Panic! At The Disco’s Dear A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
Dear A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,
I miss you and I’m sorry. I know it’s been difficult since we parted ways and I fell in love with your sister, Death of A Bachelor. Truth is, if she knew I was writing to you, she’d be devastated, so let’s keep this between you and me.
I’ll never forget meeting you online. It was a whole new experience for me; I’d never met anyone online before. We connected instantly. I fell for you so quickly, but I didn’t think my friends would get it, or get us, so I kept our love a secret. You accompanied me on the way to school every day for the rest of that year. I’m so grateful for that. I was always so alone, but you sparked so much in me. Excitement, creativity, the whole shebang, you gave me so much. You made me want to sing more than I ever had.
I remember one day singing with you under my breath on the bus, and the girl sitting next to me, Dani, got my attention and asked me if I knew you. I was baffled. Someone else had met you and knew how great you were. I was so excited that I spoke about you with Dani the whole way home that afternoon.
A lot has changed over the past decade. We’ve grown apart and it must have hurt you a lot to see me form such a close bond with your sister, but please know that I miss you a lot. You helped to mould me into the creative man I am today. I don’t even want to think about the husk of a human I’d be if I never let you breathe life into me.
Thank you for everything, Fever. I hope that one day, when the time is right, we can rekindle our romance.
David De La Hoz.
