Love Letter To A Record: South Summit On Kings Of Leon’s ‘Only By The Night’

Music Feeds’ Love Letter to a Record series asks artists to reflect on their relationship with the music they love and share stories about how it has influenced their lives. Here, West Australian indie dance outfit South Summit pay homage to Kings Of Leon’s fourth studio album, 2008’s ‘Only By The Night’.

It comes as South Summit gear up to release their highly-anticipated debut studio album ‘The Bliss’ on Friday, 8th November. Described by band member Josh Trindall as “a fresh new sound to our fans”, South Summit “mixed up happy and sad vibes, and everything in between” on their forthcoming first record, “experimenting with new sounds and pushing the limits of our production and live performance in the studio“. You can pre-save the LP here or check out South Summit’s forthcoming live dates – and read the band’s love letter to Kings Of Leon’s ‘Only By The Night’ – below.

South Summit – ‘Catacombs’

South Summit: Only By The Night by Kings Of Leon is an all-time classic. No matter how hard and far we look for new music, we keep coming back to this album as one of our favourites, and one has influenced South Summit.

Even though there is a lot of experimentation with genre throughout the record, each song fades into the next seamlessly, and it seems like every song “fits”. This is a main reason why we adore this album, we love to experiment with different genres and sounds with our own music, and this is especially the case with our debut album The Bliss.

Only By The Night is also a very successful record with huge international fanbase raving over the album. This album has some anthems in there that are so easy to sing-along to. You can only sit back and appreciate when such a large group of people sing a melody to your song.

Every track on this album is a must-listen, and while its important to listen to album in its entirety, if we were to pick out our faves they would be ‘Closer’, ‘Manhattan’, ‘Use Somebody’ and ‘Notion’.
