Meet Slomosa: The Norwegian ‘Tundra Rock’ Band About To Flatten Australian Venues

If your idea of a perfect night out involves gigantic riffs, sweaty rooms and the spiritual experience of being emotionally flattened by groove-heavy desert rock… congratulations, Slomosa are finally coming to Australia.

And honestly? It sounds like they’re just as excited – and mildly terrified – as the rest of us are.

Slomosa – ‘Battling Guns’

The Norwegian quartet have spent the past few years quietly building one of the strongest cult followings in modern heavy rock, blending fuzzy stoner riffs, grunge hooks and punk energy into what they’ve lovingly dubbed “Tundra Rock”. Think Kyuss if they were raised in the Arctic instead of the desert. Or Queens of the Stone Age with seasonal depression.

Now, after years of Aussie fans flooding their inboxes demanding a tour, Slomosa are finally making good on the promise this month with debut headline dates across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

“It’s as far away from home as we can get,” frontman Benjamin Berdous laughs. “So it’s pretty special to play there.”

And while the band have toured relentlessly through Europe and the US – sharing stages with everyone from Alkaline Trio to stoner rock royalty like Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri – Australia has remained one of those mythical bucket-list destinations, hovering just out of reach.

Until now.

“We’ve been getting messages from Australian fans for years,” Berdous says. “‘You come to Brazil, you come to Mexico… when are you coming to Australia?’ So now’s the time.”

Naturally, the band already have a few very important Australian priorities lined up.

“The obvious one is the Opera House,” he says. “We have to take the picture.”

There’s also beaches, wildlife, deserts… and apparently a deeply ingrained fear of our spiders.

“When I think about Australia I just think snakes and spiders,” he laughs. “But we play desert rock music, so it’s always nice to go to countries with deserts.”

What Slomosa seem most curious about though is the crowds – particularly Australia’s reputation for absolute mayhem at rock shows.

“You always hear Australians are outgoing and funny,” Berdous says. “Americans don’t give a fuck at gigs, and I hope Australians are the same way.”

Given the band’s live rep, it’s fair to say things could get very loose very quickly.

Part of what makes Slomosa so compelling is the weirdly universal appeal of their music. Sure, the DNA is deeply rooted in classic stoner rock and grunge, but their songs are catchy in a way that sneaks up on you – massive riffs colliding with melodies that stick in your head for days afterwards.

Which is something Berdous himself still seems slightly shocked by.

“I never thought ordinary people would latch onto desert rock,” he says. “But we have fans now who aren’t traditional rock fans or stoners… and I’m pretty proud of that.”

That crossover appeal has helped turn Slomosa from underground darlings into one of heavy music’s fastest-growing global names. And if their latest album Tundra Rock is anything to go by, they’re only getting bigger.

Not that they’re thinking small. When asked about future ambitions, Berdous casually drops perhaps the most metal answer imaginable: playing on the moon.

“I guess that’s not achievable,” he laughs. “But we could be the first band to do that.”

Honestly? At this rate, who knows.

For now though, Australia will have to do – and something tells us these shows are about to leave a pretty serious mark.

Because if Slomosa’s towering riffs, absurd grooves and full-body live energy translate here the way they have everywhere else… Aussie heavy fans might be about to discover their next obsession.
