Sydney’s Caravãna Sun are putting their hearts on the line, today unveiling the emotional and passionate video for their emotional single ‘Whale Song’.
Born out of a time of self-reflection in the early hours of the morning, on a centuries-old piano belonging to Caravãna Sun vocalist Ant Beard’s family, ‘Whale Song’ is a passionate cry for the courage to be one’s self.
“Spending countless hours with someone who knows you better than anyone tends to bring out the best in people, for me that someone is my mother’s piano,” explains Beard. “‘Whale Song’ took form around 3am. I had that riff in my right hand but due to my lack of skill, it hung suspended in the mist of the morning. After about 2 hours the right hand came to the party, and the lyrics came spilling out.
“This song represents the struggle we feel in today’s society to be fearlessly ourselves. In the face of our own personal battles, it’s the fear of letting go of all inhibitions and just following our intuition. All the bullshit that surrounds our society beats us down into a place where we feel content, but this comfort doesn’t help anything. ‘Whale Song is about fearlessly following your heart, wherever that may lead you.”
The visuals for ‘Whale Song’ aim to capture that 3am writing session, the simple yet evocative video featuring Ant Beard playing that famed piano softly lit by candlelight. “We wanted to capture the most real and raw performance of this song as we could,” explains Beard. “We stuck a bunch of microphones and spilled a shit load of wax over my old piano. The audio you hear is the whole second take we ran on the night with nothing else but the Roland 201 tape echo.
“This band has been DIY from the start, priding ourselves on our grass roots following. This video took it back to the piano it was written on and into the garage it sits ever so patiently.”
The band will be taking ‘Whale Song’ and the album it sits on, Guerrilla Club, on the road this year across Australia and New Zealand. The tour will be presented by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the band will be donating $5 per each sold merchandise item to Sea Shepherd.
