Candian muso Frazey Ford has leant her mesmerising voice to a song by another music wizard, today unveiling her tribute to D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar jam ‘When We Get By’.
In her interpretation, Ford transforms the soulful funk track into a slinky, enchanting slow-burner, her voice gently but broodily draped over melting horns.
“This song was born late night on stage in a Paris jazz club,” says Ford. “We had recently been incredibly inspired seeing D’Angelo live in Holland on his Black Messiah Tour and wanted to explore reinterpreting one of his songs with an entirely different feel.”
‘When We Get By’ is Ford’s first single in three years, following the release of her 2014 breakup anthem ‘Done’.
Australian audiences can witness Frazey Ford’s magic first hand when the muso returns this November for a run of tour dates alongside her performance at this year’s Mullum Music Festival.
