SOMA Takes Us Track-By-Track Through Her New Mixtape ‘Cobra’

Sydney-based alternative hip-hop artist SOMA has finally dropped her long-awaited debut mixtape, Cobra. She has spared no expense with its rollout, simultaneously sharing an accompanying film that serves as a visual accompaniment for all songs in sequential order – and has also announced a hometown launch for it, taking place at Enmore’s Trocadero Room next Friday night (March 7th).

Cobra is a mixtape about life, love, loss, self-discovery, letting go, taking control, and learning to stop caring about the things that don’t matter,” SOMA shared with Music Feeds. “It’s about trauma and triumph, overcoming abuse, and using that pain to harness my power. A series of unfortunate events that led me down a path of self-healing and empathy.

“Writing this was an empowering and deeply cathartic experience. I chose the mixtape format because I wanted to release a cohesive body of work that truly represents my sound and my story. It feels so good to finally get these thoughts out—onto paper, into music. My own therapy sessions. My metamorphosis.”

With Cobra now officially out in the world, SOMA exclusively shares with Music Feeds some insight into each of these striking and revealing songs.

SOMA – Cobra

Blood Spilt

The opener strikes hard — dark, cinematic, and steeped in intention. A song about overcoming trauma and turning pain into art. My lyrics are underscored by live percussion and distorted synths, recorded in a single take that channels the raw weight of my words. It’s an introduction to the mixtape’s emotional gravity.

Burn

With a pulsing, ominous beat, ‘Burn’ slowly descends into chaos. The track is filled with tension, highlighted by eerie vocal samples that create a sense of paranoia. The film’s fire-lit visuals match the intensity, amplifying the track’s feeling of destruction.

11:11

Dreamy, reversed piano chords make 11:11 hypnotic and meditative. I freestyled much of this one, embracing a free-flowing creative space. It became one of the mixtape’s most unfiltered, intimate moments, capturing the essence of creative clarity.

Eyes Wide Open (Breathe)

Defiant and heavy, ‘Eyes Wide Open’ blends deep 808s with industrial textures, recorded in near darkness with a single red light in the studio to heighten focus. The film’s visuals — surveillance imagery— explores the feeling of being constantly watched and underestimated.

Sink

A stark, self-reflective track where my vocals have more room to breathe. Recording ‘Sink’ felt almost uncomfortable, as it dug into personal revelations. This vulnerability makes it one of the mixtape’s most emotionally powerful tracks.

Strange Dream

Emotional and cathartic, ‘Strange Dream’ is about knowing when to let go. I recorded multiple intense takes, with Danny Duke piecing them together to preserve the rawness. The song’s energy mirrors the turmoil of cutting ties and finding freedom.

Lotus 2

A hypnotic, bass-heavy continuation of my earlier work, ‘Lotus 2’ flows with cryptic, poetic lyrics. Created during a late-night session, the track’s dreamlike visuals in the film reflect a trance-like state, blurring exhaustion and creativity into a singular moment of clarity. It’s also is my tribute to a best friend and lover who left us too soon. We met at 16, and our bond grew into a love that guided us through the ups and downs of youth.

Say It

The second single from the mixtape, ‘Say It’ explores the magnetic pull between two souls —the one you can’t stop thinking about, and the one who lingers in your mind and body. It’s a sensual, metaphorical journey told through the lens of an alien who’s fallen for a human.

24/7

The closing track is relentless and urgent, recorded when I was at my most exhausted. My voice cracks in places, yet that imperfection adds to the track’s raw power. In the film, ’24/7′ closes the story on an open-ended note, mirroring the mixtape’s unresolved tension.
