Sometimes here at Music Feeds, we just can’t interview every artist we’d like to. So on this occasion, out of equal parts necessity and curiosity, we enlisted them to do our job for us.
Today, Queensland’s own Tia Gostelow has shared another taste of what’s to come from her forthcoming second album, with third single ‘Always’. The song features the vocal stylings of Holy Holy’s Tim Carroll and its production is helmed by the duo’s second half, Oscar Dawson. Dawson, in fact, is at the production helm of Gostelow’s forthcoming album, due out sometime this year.
In celebration of the dream team collaboration, we thought we’d see what would happen if we let interview each other.
Tia interviews Oscar
Tia: How do you like to spend your spare time/unwind when you’re not playing/producing music?
Oscar: Mainly by playing/producing music… sometimes also eating food and reading… every now and then I exercise but I really try to keep that to a bare minimum…
Tia: When did you feel like Holy Holy had ‘made it’?
Oscar: Ummmm…. honestly… I haven’t felt that ever…
Tia: What are your favourite lyrics from a song?
Oscar: I’m not a huge lyrics person, tbh., but I love this line, esp in the context of the song itself;
‘Because I’m still in love with you,
I wanna see you dance again’
– Neil Young, Harvest Moon.
So simple, yet says so much.
Tia: Where’s the first spot you’ll go for a holiday when things are back to normal?
Oscar: Good question! I’m bad at holidays, I keep threatening to take them and it doesn’t often happen. Hmm. It’ll just be nice to leave a 100m radius of my home, really. I am worried that after all this lockdown I now have agoraphobia and will feel more afraid of flying. ANYWAY – I really want to go back to India… I’m just worried that it might take longer for things to get back to ‘normal’ there.
Tia: What was your favourite song to work on for the album?
Oscar: Well, it was really fun getting some of those big vocal notes toward the end of ‘Psycho’, wasn’t it! I love those moments… And likewise, in ‘Always’, I feel we dug deep, vocally… I just love those times when something personal and magical happens, and it transcends technique or plan, so; those songs were my faves.
Tia: Most memorable moment on stage?
Oscar: I’d guess my most memorable moment on stage was actually off the stage, bc I fell off it, and it was a high stage, and I fell on to someone, and I think it hurt them, and it hurt me too, physically, but mainly emotionally, and the moment is ‘memorable’ because I can’t forget it, as much as I’d like to.
Tia: Would you rather have arms as legs or legs as arms?
Oscar: To clarify the question. In this situation, would I still retain my other limbs? Ie., to have arms as legs, I’ll still have my 2 regular arms? Because if that’s the case, defo arms as legs. 4 x arms would be awesome, it’d be essentially a superpower.

Oscar: Were you nervous to work with me?
Tia: Not really, to be honest, I felt like I knew you vicariously through the stories Ali told me about you. I felt like we would vibe though because Ali told me you use the word derision and swear a lot…
Oscar: Favourite gig you’ve ever played and why?
Tia: Probably when I played Mountain Goat Valley Crawl in Brisbane this year! It was a free festival all through Fortitude Valley in Brisbane and we were headlining. I was so nervous to be headlining and I thought that nobody was going to show up but it ended up being one of the biggest shows we’ve played with people lining up down the street to get in! It was the most fun I’ve ever had on stage and the crowd was so amazing with their singing and dancing!
Oscar: What’s your biggest fangirl moment?
Tia: I did have a moment where I thought I was going to completely fangirl and embarrass myself beyond belief but, I didn’t. Last year my good friend Alex who I’ve done a lot of writing with, set up a co-write with him and I and Matt Corby down at his Rainbow Valley studio for a couple of days. I’ve been a huge Matt Corby fan for as long as I can remember so it was definitely a very surreal thing to be doing some writing with him.
Oscar: What’s a song you’d wish you’d written?

Oscar: Do you have any party tricks?
Tia: I can still do the cup song, love pulling that out. Brings the good vibes.
Oscar: What’s your funniest memory of our time in the studio?
Tia: Overall the whole week we were in the studio was just so much fun. A favourite memory though would definitely have to be the night we were recording the vocals for ‘PSYCHO’ and ‘ALWAYS’ and I was a little drunk and you and Baz pushed me to do those high notes. I just remember all of us being so excited about it, was a very wholesome moment which I haven’t forgotten.
Oscar: What’s been something new for you that’s come out of lockdown?
Tia: I’ve definitely started being a lot more physically active and getting outside more, even if I just go for a walk. I feel like it’s really helped with my mental health as well which is really nice.
Oscar: Favourite childhood movie and why?
Tia: Suddenly 30, hands down.
