A Music Festival Will Be Held In Sydney To Honour Richard Gill

The world is still reeling from the loss of beloved Australian conductor and music educator, Richard Gill, who passed away last month at 76 from bowel and peritoneal cancer.

Now, a music festival in Sydney’s Inner West will be established to honour the legend’s legacy and impact on the Australian music community.

Gill had previously raised the idea of having a festival in his home suburb of Stanmore, inspired by France’s Fête de la Musique. Unfortunately, Gill never got to see his vision come to fruition due to logistics and red tape, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

But now, Inner West council mayor David Byrne says that holding the festival would be the best way to honour Gill.

“As has been demonstrated since Richard’s death through the outpouring and admiration and respect for his life’s work, the impact he made was huge,” Mr Byrne said.

“Richard’s passing is very sad but his legacy is incredible, his contribution to music and to the inner west should be celebrated and we should certainly try to generate a music festival that can do that.”

A meeting will be held in February next year with interested parties to get this festival up and running.
