AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has confirmed that the band plan on touring to celebrate their 40th anniversary. While promoting his new solo project, Rudd said the band is “ready to fire up on all cylinders again.” His comments come after frontman Brian Johnson said a tour was “very likely.”
“There is an AC/DC tour planned for the 40th anniversary of the band, but I don’t know all the details yet,” Rudd told News Limited. “I’ll get a call a month before they need me. We’ve done some long, hard tours. It’s not easy. You do it for 18 months you’re the walking dead when you finish, especially as you get older. But everything’s great in the band, we’re ready to fire up on all cylinders again.”
The hard rock legends have spent the past months holed up in a Vancouver recording studio with producer Brendan O’Brien, working on their follow-up to 2008’s well-received Black Ice. Johnson recently confirmed that the band’s 15th album has been completed and will be titled Man Down.
“I don’t know when it’s coming out, I’ve asked Angus to email me some of it now they’ve done more work on it, I’m really keen to hear it finished,” Rudd told News Limited. “My [drumming] parts were done in ten days and it sounded great when I left. I really enjoyed making this album,” he added.
The album is their first since guitarist Malcolm Young left the group over health issues, which many speculated would be the end of the band. Band biographer Jesse Fink recently told a Boston radio station that he doesn’t expect Young to return and that Young’s nephew Stevie will most likely tour with the band. Stevie Young reportedly filled in for his ailing uncle during the Man Down sessions.
“We were never going to retire. It’ll never happen. Angus will never retire and as long as Angus never retires I won’t fucking retire either,” said Rudd. In fact, Rudd revealed that Angus Young is responsible for all of the music on the new album. “Angus wrote everything,” said Rudd.
Hopes of a new tour from the hard rock icons first sparked back in May, after Johnson told an interviewer that he’s “[not] finished” playing live. The band was recently rumoured to have been booked as one of the headliners for next year’s instalment of the UK’s Glastonbury festival.
