Alleged Conman Charged After Making $40K Selling Fake Concert Tickets On Gumtree

A Melbourne man has been accused of swindling punters out of $40,000 by selling them fake concert tickets on Gumtree.

According to The Herald Sun, 31-year-old James Zombolas is set to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later this month on 149 charges, which largely relate to scalping dodgy tickets to concerts by One Direction, Coldplay, Chet Faker, Falls Festival and more via the online auction giant (as well as assaulting a woman, drug possession, and committing offences whilst on bail. Real nice guy).

Zombolas allegedly operated his fake ticket racket between 2013 and 2015, at one point fleecing the same poor woman out of $1,000 on two separate occasions.

He’s also been accused of grifting another woman out of $300 by selling her fake tickets to the play Les Miserables.

And if you thought the scam artist couldn’t sink any lower, he also allegedly asked to see a male customer’s driver’s license as proof of ID, then used it to defraud several other poor saps.

Zombolas is set to front court on April 28th.

Meanwhile, Gumtree has reiterated its policy of urging customers to make sure their transactions are conducted face-to-face, and never to transfer money to someone they don’t know.

Because if a seller refuses to prove they’re legit, it should definitely set off some alarm bells.
