The music world is struggling to come to grips with the tragic news that Avicii has passed away at the age of just 28.
His cause of death is not yet known, but the beloved Swedish DJ’s publicist has confirmed the shock tidings to Billboard, revealing only that Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, was in Oman at the time of his death.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” the official press statement reads.
“He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
The Grammy-nominated EDM legend retired from touring back in 2016 after several years of ongoing health issues, including “acute pancreatitis, in part due to excessive drinking”.
He was hospitalised in 2012, before suffering from sporadic stomach issues a year later leading eventually to a ruptured appendix, along with needing to have his gallbladder removed in 2014.
He last toured Australia in 2013 as part of Future Music Festival, and was taken to hospital in Brisbane during that time. He later shared BTS footage of the ordeal on Facebook (below).
Tributes to the electro superstar have begun to pour in across social media, with Calvin Harris describing him as as “a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do”.
Devastating news about Avicii, a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do. My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim x
