This is frankly the best news that could possibly have come through on a Monday morning in Sydney. Austin, Texas legends of modern psychedelia the Black Angels have announced their first Australian visit with dates in June and July.
The band are on tour supporting their third album Phosphene Dream, which came out in September 2010. In recent times they have put on the fourth version of their own festival, the Austin Psych Fest, and hooked up again with friend and fellow Austin-native, Roky Erickson.
Phosphene Dream was the follow-up to 2008’s excellent Directions To See A Ghost, while their debut was 2006’s equally fine Passover.
The Black Angels are led by the dual-assault of friends Alex Maas on vocals and Christian Bland on guitar. For an idea of what to expect, see the video below. In that clip, you’ll see Jennifer Raines on keyboard, who has now left the band.
The Angels will be touring with their mate Joel Gion of the Brian Jonestown Massacre in tow, who will be performing DJing duties across the three nights.
