The ground is starting to rumble as the brand new album from Aussie hip-hop juggernauts Bliss N Eso steadily approaches.
Now that the smoke has cleared following the release of their maiden single and first new track in three years Dopamine, the trio have let loose Friend Like You, a powerful and inspiring jam brought to life with the help from a living legend of soul, Lee Fields.
As the name suggests, Friend Like You is an encouraging tune from the trio, who’ve picked up the tone since the dark and brooding Dopamine. Friend Like You feels like a pat on the back, or almost like a reassuring high-5 from the group who wax philosophical about retaining faith in oneself, a message that truly never gets old.
The inclusion of Lee Fields is nothing short of amazing. The crooner provides tasty bars throughout the song, adding a timeless quality to the track and its chorus.
Both Bliss and Eso appeared to still be pinching themselves over Fields’ involvement in the track, with Bliss telling triple j: “Lee Fields is a bit of a legend from Chicago. He’s about 65 years old; he kinda got discovered late in the game but his voice is amazing, he’s sort of on that James Brown vibe.
“We were actually doing a show in Chicago a couple of years ago at the House of Blues, and while we were there we saw the Hall of Fame [and] saw a picture of Lee. We found an old dusty record of his and we played it. The moment we heard this guy’s voice – it was amazing.”
Testament to just how keen the boys are to get this album to the point, they’ve already announced the supporting national tour.
