Brisbane Festival 2014 Lineup Announced

The annual Brisbane Festival has announced its 2014 lineup and it’s jam-packed with 73 productions and 440 performances over just three weeks. Returning this year is the world-famous Spiegeltent, which will host the likes of Phil Jamieson, Andy Bull and the Midnight Juggernauts.

Also set to perform intimate sets within the famed ornate wooden tent are Melbourne-bred masters of indietronica Miami Horror, US troubadour and four-time Grammy winning producer Joe Henry, electronic producer The Kite String Tangle, Brisbane punk rockers Dune Rats and US folk rocker Damien Jurado.

The Brisbane festival will also host the Australian premiere of iconic composer Philip Glass’s opera about Walt Disney, The Perfect American. The visual spectacular imagines the final months of Walt Disney’s life and includes mythical projections of Abraham Lincoln and Andy Warhol.

Hip Hop artist Urthboy will curate and present a live performance inspired by the sentimental and celebratory nature of making mixtapes. The MC and his special guests will perform a live set meshing story telling with music.

The Brisbane festival will also stage DESH, the one-man work by renowned contemporary dancer Akram Khan. The award-winning circus-cabaret show LIMBO will be whisking audiences into a sinister world of contortion, along with Australian troupe Scotch & Soda as well as the Circa troupe who will perform their show The Physical Impossibility of Disappearing.

This year’s Brisbane Festival will be the last for artistic director Noel Staunton. It is expected to open in magnificent style with three free high-altitude evening performances by Spanish/Argentinian troupe Grupa Puja.

“There will be all these people dangling in the air doing amazing things … it’s an incredible piece,” Staunton told The Brisbane Times. “It’ll be scary, frightening, but fun.” There will also be a host of comedy shows, talks, live art and family events.

The Brisbane Festival kicks off on September 6th and goes through until September 27th. Tickets for the 2014 Brisbane Festival go on sale Monday, June 30. For more information, visit the festival website.

UPDATE 02/09/14: Meg Mac will now play at The Telstra Spiegeltent on Sunday, 21st September as part of the upcoming Brisbane Festival, following the cancellation of Seattle singer-songwriter Damien Jurado’s Australian tour.
